The Alans?

Creating a social networking site just for people called "Alan" is not such a daft idea as it might at first seem.

In fact, there was a great tribe in pre and medieval history known as The Alans and they dominated much of central and eastern Europe.

From the Wikipedia:

The Alans or Alani (occasionally but more rarely termed Alauni or Halani) were an Iranian[1][2] nomadic group among the Sarmatian people, warlike nomadic pastoralists of varied backgrounds, who spoke an Iranian language and to a large extent shared a common culture.[3]

In fact, we even had our own Kingdom - Alania:

Alania was a medieval kingdom of the Alans (proto-Ossetians) that flourished in the Northern Caucasus, roughly in the location of latter-day Circassia and modern North Ossetia-Alania, from the 8th or 9th century until its destruction by the Mongol invasion in 1238-39. Its capital was Maghas, and it controlled a vital trade route through the Darial Pass.

So as well as being a large and wide-spread tribal force of the past, there have been many famous and infamous Alans.
